Hi mcorbin174,
Have you asked your doctor who prescribed the NuvaRing? I bet the office nurses would be able to answer your question. They are there to help you and answer questions specific to your health history. I personally doubt if you've been using birth control this whole time, your method hasn't failed. That being said, it's never a bad idea to use a backup method to protect yourself from unwanted pregnancy.
Did your doctor tell you it was OK to put a new ring in right away after taking one out? I tried to find information online stating that was acceptable. I know when you try and skip a period with birth control pills in a similar way, it's normal to experience some breakthrough bleeding, and cramping. Everything I've seen online states that if you experience abdominal cramping with NuvaRing, you should contact your doctor to make sure everything is alright.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.
