It is important to follow your doctor's advice, and get a mammogram. Discharge from your nipple is an indicator of something that needs medical attention, regardless of the odor, color, consistency. There is just no way around this one, and please know that the symptoms could indicate a condition that has an "easy" fix! The important thing is: whatever the cause to your nipple discharge, the sooner you get it checked out, the sooner you will be able to begin treatment (and the sooner the treatment, the easier it is!).
