Hi Anonymous

Have you seen a health care provider? Anal fistulas tend to be caused by either a serious problem in your abdomen or autoimmune disease. Do you know the cause of yours?

My advice is to absolutely not get pregnant until you know what is causing your fistula, because if you are ill or have an undiagnosed autoimmune problem you don't know what a pregnancy would do to you or the baby. Sometimes you have more than one fistula. One goes to the outside of your body, but they can tunnel into other places too, including your uterus.

Fistulas themselves can be very dangerous and put you at risk for skin breakdown and severe infection. If you know your diagnosis already, I suggest you discuss your fistula and the desire to get pregnant with a gynecologist to be sure it is safe for you, and safe for the baby.

Thank you for writing and if you would like to discuss this further, please let us know. Good luck to you.
