i had my period last feb 22 and it lasted for 7 days approx (including the spotting phase indicating that the period is almost over). and after 4 days i saw spottings again which i didnt expect coz i suppose im done with it. now, i wonder, is it possible that ive been preggo all this time? that spotting freaked me out. i last did it feb 12. im not sure if this is hormonal too coz my cycle has been really weird lately. last time it reached 39days til i had my period and ive experienced waiting for 45days for my period to arrive. what could be the problem? is it normal to have spottings again when im already done with my period?

Hi Janelle,
Thank you for responding. Having irregular periods at this age is not uncommon. Your diet could certainly cause some of the irregularity. If your body has any changes, this may cause irregularity to your periods as I explained. Our bodies are very picky.

It appears that your decision to not try birth control is over a situation with your friend. Go to your physician and talk about your options to try and maintain a regular cycle. I would also mention your eating habits as I think this would certainly cause issues. Maintaining a healthy weight will be important to structure your period.

Your physician will also explain to you that this is very common for teenagers and young adults. From my personal experience, I also had periods perhaps 2 to 3 times a year in my teenage years. I went on birth control pills for about 2 to 3 years and then stopped and still maintain a regular period now into my 30s.

After you go and talk to your physician, come back and tell us what decision you made regarding what he/she tells you. Keep us posted.

I hope this helps,
Missie

Hi Janelle,
It is very common to have irregular periods from the start of your period well into your late 20s. I am not sure how old you are but I will assume you fall into this category.

There are several different things that will cause disturbances in your cycle such as stress, diet changes, exercise patterns, etc. Of course there is the chance of irregular periods for no real apparent reason also.

You indictated that you are not that interested in birth control methods to control your period. May I ask what concerns you may have?

I hope this information helps explain why people may have irregular periods. Sometimes, honestly, it just happens and there is no perfect answer.

Good luck,
Missie

hi missie :) actually i'm in my early 20's-i'm turning 22 this year. i consider my diet as one factor coz i don't eat right. sometimes i starve or limit my meals and sometimes i indulge in food. but i'm not bulimic or anything not even anorexic. it's just that i have body issues. for the birth control part um..it's because im scared of its side effects like gaining weight, bleeding (just like what happened to my friend and was rushed to the hospital-coz she thought her pills were ineffective and thought she was preggo). my mom said that when she was a teen her cycle was kind of irregular too like she had her period 6x/year and that was before she took pills. she even thought you wouldnt be able to bear a child because of that imbalance. anther thing that worries me is that my mom asked "are you pregnant coz your hips got bigger" and i questioned myself. the only thing im holding onto is the fact that i had my period and ever since i havent done it with my bf.

If your LMP was 12 days ago and you are starting to have clear discharge then that's perfectly fine-- usually ovulation occurs at or around 14 days after your LMP so 12 days is perfect. Not every woman is the same and while you may ovulate after 12 days, I may ovulate at 15 days and someone else may ovulate at 13 days.

How long have you had periods that were 45 days apart? I know you don't want to go on a pill to regulate your period but there are low estrogen options out there that can help.

well i can't really tell coz the cycles differ but it started late last year. my cycle ranges from 27-45 days, i really cant tell now. it's all been messed up. what can cause this imbalance if i may ask?

Janelle,

Spotting between a period can be normal. Our periods change every so often and this could be a part of it-- it sounds like you may have had a change somewhere since you experience irregular cycles and sometimes have to wait 45 days. Do you have any other symptoms or is it just the spotting?

it's just the spottings actually that caught my attention. it's my first time to experience in between cycle spottings so i really don't know what's wrong with my body. i get worried whenever my cycle's been too long thinking if im pregnant or maybe there's something serious going on with my reproductive system. it's my 12th day since my lmp and i just started to have clear discharges which i suppose a starting sign of ovulation. i just want my cycle to be normal and i'm scared to take pills to normalize it. do you have any idea how to make my cycle right?
