Hi Nfrazer,

I'm so sorry to hear that you've sprained your ankle once more. It is very possible that the effects of arthritis are what's making you more susceptible to sprains. Arthritis involves the breakdown of cartilage. Cartilage normally protects a joint, allowing it to move smoothly. Cartilage also absorbs shock when pressure is placed on the joint, such as when you walk. Without the normal amount of cartilage, the bones rub together, causing pain, swelling (inflammation), and stiffness.

With that being said, I also think that the amount of surgery your ankle has undergone also has some input on how fragile it is at this point.

You are right, taking OTC pain medications such as Tylenol and Motrin can certainly do some damage to your liver therefore your doctor should be monitoring your liver enzymes with periodical blood tests.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but in a job that requires so much mobility and standing on your feet constantly for long periods of time, you may have to look for a very reputable surgeon that can truly help you in your situation, especially if you're looking to become a surgical tech. Surgery may be the last thing on your mind but if you're still in so much pain and have a very unstable ankle then your job is only going to get harder and harder.

Wishing you the best,

Rosa
