Sorry to hear that about your boyfriend--Pleurisy pain is no joke. The growth on your boyfriend's liver is a liver cyst that will go away on its own. Liver cysts do not impair the liver’s ability to function and are always benign unless your boyfriend starts to develop symptoms (stomach fullness, discomfort or pain).

As far as the pleurisy, If your boyfriend was tested for a bacterial infection and no bacteria was found, then this is why they only gave him the treatment for pain. Usually antibiotics are given if the cause is bacterial and not viral.

Here are several causes for either acute or chronic pleurisy.

Viral infection (influenza, mumps)
Lung infections from bacteria (eg, tuberculosis ) or parasites (eg, amebiasis)
Systemic lupus

Sharp, stabbing pain towards the side and lower part of the chest especially when lying down, with relief by sitting up
Pain along the shoulders, neck, and abdomen
Aggravated pain during any movement of the chest, such as breathing and coughing
Dry coughing
Weakness
Headaches
Loss of appetite
Chills
Fever
Rapid pulse
Rapid and shallow breathing
