While nurses play an important role in the health care system it can be quite dangerous that someone with 2 yrs of clinical training is given the same complex patient as someone with 10 yrs of clinical training. The average DNP or NP has approx 6,000 hours of clinical training before he/she can practice on their own autonomously, whereas the average primary care physician has a minimum of 20,000 and in subspecialties far more than this even. More than a turf war it will be the patient who suffers since often it is a slight nuance that may be missed which only comes with experience and proper training. When it comes to life or death, id prefer the person who has the more extensive training as this is not a matter of inherent intelligence or compassion but life or death situations are a matter of experience.
