Hi,
A diagnosis of attention deficit disorder can be scary, and symptoms can be a challenge for parents and children alike. However, treatment can make a big difference, and most children with ADHD grow up to be normal adults. ADD includes some combination of problems, such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. Children with ADD also may struggle with low self-esteem, troubled relationships and poor performance in school.
Consulting your child's pediatrician and asking for a referral to have him checked for ADD may be a good start. With a diagnosis, treatment can be prescribed. Medications such as Ritalin is not the only option. Antidepressants and medication generally used to treat high blood pressure have shown to help with symptoms. Behavioral therapy and counseling can help. Lifestyle tips include keeping a regular schedule, showing your child lots of affection, making sure he get plenty of rest, being patient and realistic in your expectations for his improvement and identifying and avoiding difficult situations for your child can all be helpful.
