Hi,
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common problem in the elderly population. The spectrum of disease varies from a relatively benign cystitis to potentially life-threatening pyelonephritis.

Women are more susceptible because their urethra is shorter and closer to the anus. The elderly are more vulnerable because of a suppressed immune system that comes with age and certain medical conditions. In the elderly, the bladder muscles have become weaker which leads to less effective bladder emptying and an increased amount of urine left in the bladder. The retained and stagnant urine becomes a breeding ground for the growth and colonization of the bacteria that cause UTIs.

You can prevent the frequent occurrence of UTIs by asking your mother to avoid beverages with caffeine and alcohol because these drinks tend to irritate the bladder.Encourage her to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Drinking cranberry juice helps. Keeping the genital area clean and wiping from front to back are both prevention measures.
Hope this answers your question and is helpful information.
