Hi Anonymous, 

Causes of upper right pain include: 

• Biliary colic or Gallstones
• Cholecystitis or inflammation of the gallbladder
• Duodenal ulcers
• Kidney Stones / ureteric stones
• Appendicitis
• Constipation
• Pulled muscle
• Trapped wind

Since there is a mass and the pain seems to be radiating, I would tell you to go to the doctor with him. If you find it difficult to get to the doctor, try calling his doctor first. Then if he tells you to go in or to go to the Emergency Department you may have to take the children in tow.
