I cannot tell you exactly what the cause of your pain is but I can give you some possible reasons. A physical evaluation by your physician is the best way to know what it could be.
Tense neck muscles, specifically the sternocleidomastoid muscle, could be the cause. This muscle is located on the side of the neck. It goes from the thorax to the base of the skull behind the ear.
An ear infection can cause pain in the ear which can radiate or spread to your neck.
If the pain is worse when you eat, you may have swelling in your temporomandibular joint. There is a temporomandibular joint is located on either side of your head in front of your ears, where your lower jawbone meets your skull.
A dental problem, such as an impacted wisdom tooth or an abscessed upper molar, may be the cause of your pain.
I hope that these suggestions can guide you to finding the cause of your pain.
