Guide

Trying to cope with two major conditions is quite a challenge. Glad to hear that you are able to control your type 2 diabetes with diet.

As you well know, excessive daytime sleepiness is most consistently experienced by almost all individuals with narcolepsy.

I can appreciate your reluctance to take Ritalin, but doctors often prescribe central nervous system alerting agents such as modafin, and  amphetamine-like stimulants, such as Ritalin (methylphenidate), to alleviate excessive daytime sleepiness.

Some behavioral strategies that can help:

maintaining a regular sleep schedule

avoiding alcohol and caffeine-containing beverages for several hours before bedtime

avoiding smoking, especially at night

maintaining a comfortable, adequately warmed bedroom

engaging in relaxing activities such as a warm bath before bedtime

Exercising for at least 20 minutes per day at least 4 or 5 hours before bedtime also improves sleep quality.

I don't know if you have tried any of these things,

Maryann
