Guide

If your husband is noticing bleeding only when he is brushing his teeth, it is possible that the cause is gum inflammation or gum disease,
If indeed, the cause was a respiratory problem involving the throat or lungs, your husband would be coughing up or spitting up blood frequently, not just when he brushed his teeth.
Bleeding gums are mainly due to inadequate plaque removal from the teeth at the gum lines. This will lead to a condition called gingivitis or inflamed gums. If the plaque is not removed, it will harden into what is known as tartar. This will lead to increased bleeding and a more advanced form of gum and jawbone disease known as periodontitis.
If your husband has not visited the dentist, I suggest he make an appointment for a dental cleaning and plaque removal.
Should the dentist not find any evidence of gum disease, then I suggest making an appointment with his medical doctor to determine the cause of the bleeding.
