Guide

Hello Anonymous,

As you may or may not know, a goiter is a condition that develops when the thyroid gland grows larger than normal. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck.

The most common cause of goiter worldwide is a lack of iodine in the diet.

Treatment depends on the size of the goiter, your symptoms and the underlying cause.

Has your doctor told you the cause of your goiter? Depending on the cause, mediation may be the treatment of choice.

Removing all or part of the thyroid gland is an option if you have a large goiter that is uncomfortable or causes difficulty breathing or swallowing.

If your physician recommends surgery, you can expect to have a scar at the incision site. Ask him or her about minimal post op scarring.
