An elevated GGT level suggest that something is damaging the liver but does not indicate specifically what. In general, the higher the level, the greater the damage to the liver.
Liver diseases, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis, congestive heart failure, diabetes, or pancreatitis cause elevated GGT levels. Alcohol abuse or the use of drugs that are toxi to the liver are other causes for elevated levels.
Anonymous, follow your physician's recommendations. Avoiding alcohol may bring your levels down.
