Hi Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHER! Thanks for your question. I understand your concern. It can be very frightening when you are experiencing abnormal symptoms and are not sure of what is going on with your body. I am glad you made an appointment with a doctor who can examine you in order to make an accurate diagnosis.

Your doctor will likely run a pregnancy test to rule it out as a possibility. A blood test will often produce more accurate results than an at-home pregnancy test. Cramping is an early sign of pregnancy, but have you experienced any other pregnancy symptoms (i.e. breast tenderness, fatigue, weight fluctuation)? Cramping, missed periods and spotting are also common side effects of birth control.

If you are taking them, your doctor may discontinue your use of hormonal birth control methods to see if your symptoms will go away. Be sure to tell your doctor anything abnormal you have noticed going on with your body and consider visiting a gynecologist (if you scheduled an appointment with a general practitioner).

Did this answer your question? Check back and let us know how you are doing!

Warm Wishes,

Shanon
