Guide

Hi concerned2014 and welcome to EmpowHER.

Thanks for seeking more information about HPV, the most common sexually transmitted infection.  HPV is so common that nearly all sexually active men and women get it at some point in their lives.

A clear pap test indicates you do not have cancer. You should be aware, however,  that HPV can cause cervical and other cancers, including cancer of the vulva, vagina, penis, or anus. It can also cause cancer in the back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils. It will be important for you to continue annual check ups.

The presence of HPV by itself should not affect your ability to get pregnant. But in some cases, having HPV can increase your risk of developing precancerous or cancerous cells in your cervix, which could affect both your fertility and your ability to carry a baby to term.

To learn more about HPV you can start with this article written for the EmpowHER community, Ten Things Every Woman Should Know About HPV.

There's going to be a lot to digest, and your doctor was correct, it is important to find this early. You will find more information in EmpowHER's Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Community section, including information from other women like you.

Hope that helps,

Pam
