Providing care, whether it be in a home or hospital setting, is demanding physically and emotionally. I know because I worked in a critical care unit for almost a decade.
Make the most of your off duty time. Some individuals can de-stress with exercise, such as jogging or a brisk game of squash. Other people can reduce their stress levels with yoga and meditation.
A hobby is a good activity to engage in and help you forget about your job.
The most important thing, I think, it to take time out for your self. If you do not take care of yourself, how can you take care of others.
Back in my college days, a visiting professor address my nursing class. I remember she said that we, as future nurses, will be like a tea cup. If we keep emptying ourselves for our patient's needs and do not refill ourselves, we are left empty.
