Hi MaryAnn, Thanks for your response. You are right, until recently that was the going theory. But some researchers are beginning to question the premise that "immune response, longevity, metabolism, reaction to stress are hardwired. ... New research is demonstrating that controlling the "uncontrollables" --adding years to your life, and modulating how your automatic nervous system reacts to stressful scenarios-- is doable. (See: http://q.equinox.com/articles/2014/07/control-the-uncontrollables)" They make a number of suggestions, but the one I like is mediation/prayer to relieve stress. Because they claim that stress is a major factor in aging. In other words, we are not helpless victims.

This research is call Epigenetics. It's means "above" or "on top of" genetics. It refers to external modifications to DNA that turn genes "on" or "off." These modifications do not change the DNA sequence, but instead, they affect how cells "read" genes.
