Thank you for sharing your question about the leading causes of death among women with the EmpowHER community. 

A review of the statistics from the Centers for Disease and Prevention, the World Health Organization, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society ranks Heart Disease as the leading cause of death among women.

In the United States, nearly 300,000 women died from heart disease in 2009-accounting for nearly 1 in 4 women. High blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease and often times women do not know they have the condition until symptoms arise, such as heart attack, heart failure, an arrhythmia or stroke.

The good news is that simple lifestyle changes can aid in prevention of heart disease. Some simple steps you can take to reduce your risk of heart disease are:

1. Having your blood pressure checked regularly.

2. Get screened for diabetes, which left uncontrolled can increase chances of getting heart disease.

3. Quit Smoking.

4.Manage healthy cholesterol by getting screened and eating a healthy diet.

5. Loosing weight. Obesity is a risk factor for heart disease.

6. Decrease stress.

7. Limit Alcohol.

8. Stay active and exercise.
