For the benefit of all our readers, spina bifida, which literally means “cleft spine,” is characterized by the incomplete development of the brain, spinal cord, and/or meninges, which is the protective covering around the brain and spinal cord.
There are four types of spina bifida: occulta, closed neural tube defects, meningocele, and myelomeningocele.
Urinary and bowel dysfunction is seen in children with meningocele and myelomeningocele spina bifida. In some cases of closed neural tube defects, the malformation causes incomplete paralysis and these individuals will have urinary and bowel dysfunction.
There are online resources that address bowel incontinence and methods for bowel control.

Anonymous, ask your pediatrician for a referral to programs that teach bowel continence techniques for children with spina bifida.
