The best sleeping position is on your back with a pillow under your knees. It will reduce the pressure and pain.
Ice works better than heat. Only ice 10 minutes at a time. More then that can actually cause damage.
The type of cane you use is really personal preference depending on how much weight you will put on it. There are 4 footed cane that can sustain heavier weight.
As far as exercise, its very very important to stay active. People with osteoarthritis often catch themselves in a loop of not exercising because of the pain, and then not exercising actually makes the condition worse, creating more pain. So this is a cycle you must avoid. However there are exercise you should avoid which include: running/jogging, jump rope, high impact aerobics activities where both feet are off the ground at once. Fortunately, that leaves a lot of exercises you can do. So take advantage of that.
