Hello and welcome to EmpowHer,
First of all, keep in mind that a bulging disk can only be diagnosed by an MRI. If a doctor tells you, you have a bulging disk by looking at an x-ray, get another doctor fast!
It is frightening to hear you may need surgery, but keep in mind that traditional medication does not explore many possibilities. Before submitting to surgery I highly suggest you look into other forms of treatment such as an inversion therapy table. While its not for everyone, I highly suggest you ask your doctor if you are a candidate.
There are also many exercises you can do that can prevent having to get surgery and also reduce or even eliminate the bulging disc. Remember to start slow with any exercise you try. Except discomfort. But if it only causes sharp pain over time, then do not continue!
1.Lie on your back, knees bent with feet on the floor. Take a deep breath in and gently and slowly arch your lower back as your stomach rises; exhale and flatten your back against the floor; repeat 10 times 4x/day.
2. lie on your back and hold both knees tightly to your chest. Try to shape your spine in an egg-shaped curve, especially the lower spine. Hold for 20 seconds; repeat five times. Alternatively, you can get a large exercise ball (Swedish exercise ball) and lie on top of it, with your lower back at the very top. The curvature of the ball will slightly traction apart the disc.
3. lie on your stomach. Make a triangle with your hands (hands open, touch index and thumb fingertips together) and place under your chest. Push up (extend your elbows) and arch your lower back, while arching your neck back as well (this is called the cobra position in yoga). When you do lower back extensions, the backs of the vertebra pinch together and force the bulge towards the center of the disc.

Here is also a great video on how to use exercise to heal a bulging disc.

The main goal is to avoid surgery if you possibly can. So I hope these tips help.
