To a women how is not breast feeding, nipple discharge can be alarming. But no need to worry. Usually its normal or caused by a minor condition.
Abnormality includes discharge coming from only one breast, or discharge that happens without any stimulation.
Normal discharge usually comes from both breasts, and happens after being pressed or squeezed. If this is the case, do not deliberately press or squeeze them. This repeated action can cause infection.
If the discharge is abnormal, there are many possible causes including:
-Fibrocystic breast changes
-Galactorrhea (not a disease, simply means a women who secretes milky white discharge when not breast feeding)
-Infection
-Mammary Duct Ectasia (typically in women approaching menopause. Caused by blockage of ducts under nipple)
-Intraductal papilloma (noncancerous growths in breasts)
-Pituitary gland tumors
-Some medications, including some hormones and psychotropic drugs
-Some herbs, such as anise and fennel
-Hypothyroidism
-Illegal drugs, including marijuana

The cause of nipple discharge can be easily determined through:
-Laboratory analysis of the discharge
-Blood tests
-Mammogram and/or ultrasound of one or both breasts
