Hello kasandraharper,

Endometriosis is a painful disorder of the reproductive system. The endometrium which is the tissue that normally line the uterus, grows outside the uterus and is found in the ovaries, intestines and lining the pelvic area.

The primary symptom of endometriosis is pelvic pain, often associated with your menstrual period. Although many women experience cramping during their menstrual period, women with endometriosis typically describe menstrual pain that's far worse than usual. They also tend to report that the pain has increased over time.

Common symptoms include:

Pelvic pain and cramping may begin before and extend several days into your period and may include lower back and abdominal pain.
Pain during or after intercourse
Pain with bowel movements and urination
Occasional heavy bleeding during periods or bleeding between periods
Infertility
Fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, bloating or nausea, especially during menstrual periods.

A woman has a higher risk of developing endometriosis if she has one or more relatives, such as mother, aunt or sister with endometriosis.

Your gynecologist will do a pelvic exam and order an ultrasound to help make the diagnosis.

Regards,
Maryann
