Hello coskayla,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your concern about the recent changes in your menstrual cycle.

I think we need to focus on your decrease in caloric intake as a possible cause.

How much do you weigh and how tall are you? How long have you been cutting back and how much weight have you lost?

Extreme weight loss, as well as extreme weight gain, can lead to a missed period or changes in the menstrual cycle. Irregular periods are seen in women with anorexia.

The daily recommended caloric intake for a sedentary female is about 1,600 to 2,000 calories per day for healthy weight management, about 1,800 to 2,200 calories each day for moderately active women, and 2,000 to 2,400 calories per day for active women.

For women who are obese or overweight, 1,000- to 1,600-calorie diets are often effective, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Although consuming fewer than 1,000 calories per day can lead to rapid weight loss, this requires medical supervision.

Stress and a hormonal imbalance, including a thyroid gland disorder can cause menstrual cycle irregularities.

coskayla, any further concerns can be discussed with your gynecologist, who can order blood test, counsel you about diet and do a physical exam.

Regards,
Maryann
