Hello and welcome to EmpowHer,
After having regular periods, it is alarming to experience an irregular one. But when this happens it is usually due to a slight hormonal imbalance that can be caused by stress, or a change in exercise, or life style. It is usually no cause for alarm.
It is only necessary to have a regular period if you are trying to get pregnant, have prolonged or frequent bleeding, or you have a serious underlying issue causing extreme symptoms.
Doctors usually prescribe birth control pills for irregular periods, however, having a late, light, or even missed period is usually not necessary to treat (unless you are trying to get pregnant as I said before).
If you are still concerned however, you can get a pap smear at your gynecologist.
