Periods can be later or irregular because of hormonal imbalances caused by stress, medication, change in diet etc. It is very common and usually nothing to worry about. However, many doctors suggest taking birth control pills to regulate the hormones if your period becomes consistently irregular.
Sometimes irregular periods can be caused by ovarian cysts, polyps, or fibroids. But usually the irregularity is prolonged or frequent bleeding as opposed to a late period with cramping.
If you period does not return to normal next month I suggest you see a gynecologist.
