You are correct. Sperm is microscopic. Sperm makes up about 5 to 10% of semen, which is ejaculated from the penis. You would know if there was any sperm on the young man's fingers because you would see semen.
Sperm can live outside the body for about 20 minutes. Once the semen has dried, sperm is dead.
