Guide

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for seeking our help with your concern.

To understand why your period is late, let's look at what Postinor 2 contains and how it works.

Postinor 2 contains levonorgestrel, which is a synthetic form of progesterone. It prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation.

You took it one day before your period was expected. Ovulation had happened about two weeks before. There was no egg to fertilize and no risk for pregnancy.

Let's look at the hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle. Estrogen, follicle stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone and progesterone play key roles.

If no pregnancy occurs, the levels of progesterone falls and this along with the decreasing amount of estrogen, helps the built up lining of the uterus to separate and for menstruation to begin.

Anonymous, when you took Postinor 2, you gave your body a blast of progesterone. That may explain why your period is late. Wait another week, if you do not start your period, contact your physician who can better advise you.

Regards,
Maryann
