Hello and welcome to EmpowHer,
I apologize for the very small font size! I will push to help change that.
Vaginal bleeding at your age does imply hormonal changes in the body. But in order to find the exact cause, you will need to see a gynecologist.
It's a good sign that you do not have any pain, cramping, or other severe PMS-like symptoms.
The fertility program you went through in the 80's may have some influence, however only a doctor would be able to analyze that.
Causes of post-menopausal bleeding can include:
--Polyps
--Endometrial atrophy (thinning of the endometrium)
--Endometrial hyperplasia
--Endometrial cancer (uterine cancer)
--infection of the uterus or cervix

Below I have pasted a link to a HER article that talks more about hormones during and after menopause.

I hope that helps.
