You know that you had a missed period if you do not get your period for that month. You take a pregnancy test. If the result is positive, you know that your are pregnant.
If you know that you are pregnant, and begin to have bleeding with pain, you contact your obstetrician/gynecologist. You may need to go to the emergency room because an ectopic pregnancy may be suspected.
If you have bleeding when your period is due and no pain, you can assume this is your period and not ectopic pregnancy bleeding.
By the way, are you concerned that you are having ectopic pregnancy bleeding? What are your symptoms? You could always contact your personal gynecologist.
