Even if a man is gentle, it can hurt if there is not enough lubrication in the vagina. So, prolonging foreplay to get you more excited (and wetter) may help. Don't rush into the act itself. Try to enjoy the process leading up to it, take it slow, don't tense up, which can also cause pain.
You might want to see your doctor for an examination, just to be sure there is no physical reason for the pain. I know you don't want to seek therapy, but if this persists, there is no shame in seeing someone who has experience in this area and can help you.
