In the book Estrogen Effects in Psychiatric Disorders the authore Niels Bergemann and Anita Riecher-Rossler present research studies which have been done using estrogen in the treatment of schzophrenia, dementia, and other memory related disorders. This is a very expensive and hard to read book but for anyone who is truly interest in this kind of research it's very fascinating stuff.
It appears from my research that studies have been ongoing all over Europe and Canada for about ten years but not here in the U.S.
Unfortunately because these studies are bogged down with all kinds of regulations on how results can be presented, it may take years before the perception of mental illness as we have know it will change.
My recommendation to anyone who is diagnosed with a mental illness such as bipolar or schzophrenia insist on having a baseline hormone level taken.
