When approaching my half century milestone, I had announced to my darling groom that there would be no surprise party because I planned on surprising the family by slipping away to some beautiful beach somewhere. Little did I know that I had thrown the family off-guard because they were all planning a surprise party, haha!

Anyway, it was going to be my first Mother's Day away from family, as well (as the two occasions usually fall within the same week). I found a lovely, little-known island in the Caribbean where we would be staying in a traditional Great House on 3 miles of white sandy beach. My darling groom managed to tell the hotel staff about my birthday and they pulled a surprise party together, complete with a really cute cake that the mother of one of the staffers baked, and they invited all the hotel guests saying they were doing a Mother's Day special. It was such a blast - even Elvis was there (the real name of one of our favorite staffers).

Talk about healthy - fresh foods and wonderful seafood prepared by world-class chefs in little local establishments, clean air, a morning run every day, crystal clear sea, happy and friendly people, beautiful surroundings and Elvis, lol! We were so ready to find a place and move there - and then 9/11/01 happened. Who knows, we might still try to retire there, and I hope to go back there for my 60th.
