Diet can definitely be an influencing factor on mental health. When a person is anxious, stressed or depressed, the adrenal glands work in overtime and your body needs more vitamins and minerals. It's important to replenish these nutrients, especially vitamins B and C which are rapidly depleted under times of stress or depression. Calcium can act as a tranquilizer (did your mother ever give you a warm glass of milk before bed?) and magnesium can help balance mood. A daily multivitamin can help, but it's important to eat well too.
When eating, aim for colorful foods (they're higher in phytonutrients) such as red peppers, butternut squash, red cabbage and pink grapefruit. Also try to wipe highly processed foods and refined sugars from your diet.
Another tip for the depressed and anxious: Eliminate caffeine. Heavy consumption can tax those adrenal glands as well.
