Macular Degeneration--Drugs Versus Lasers

Cancer research has opened a new avenue of treatment options for neovascular eye conditions, including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. The common factor is the growth of abnormal new blood vessels. In the case of cancer, a solid tumor must have a blood supply in order to grow. The tumor tricks the circulatory system into providing it with new blood vessels, in a process called angiogenesis. In the wet form of macular degeneration, new blood vessels grow under the retina and leak blood, which interferes with retinal function. Researchers have identified a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor, VEGF, which is involved in the process of blood vessel growth. Drugs that block the function of VEGF are used to treat both cancer and neovascular eye conditions.

Age-related macular degeneration affects 35 percent of Americans over the age of 80, and is the leading cause of visual deterioration and legal blindness for those over age 60. Age is the major risk factor, but there are other factors that we can control. Recent medical literature reports that vision and artery health tend to follow the same path with aging.

Social awkwardness: eye twitching and dry mouth. What can I do to stop these?

I am an outgoing person generally, so don't really have a problem with "social anxiety", but there are occasions where my eye twitches or my mouth is really dry when I start talking with someone.

Any way to cure macular degeneration?

A relative of mine has just been diagnosed with macular degeneration. He is in the early stages. My grandmother has it, and she was told that there is nothing she can really do (besides take Lutein).
