Are Tanning Beds A Fast Track to Skin Cancer?

Written by Lynette Summerill on August 20, 2009 - 7:40am

As it turns out, tanning beds pose a greater cancer risk than previously believed. The World Health Organization (WHO) this month elevated tanning beds to its highest cancer risk category – "carcinogenic to humans." Tanning beds' classification had previously been, "probably carcinogenic to humans."

Cosmetic Surgery Advice -- Consider the Source

Written by Cathy Enns on March 12, 2009 - 7:24pm

I just read an article from the Indy Star, the online version of The Indianapolis Star newspaper, on how to find a skilled cosmetic surgeon. The article advised prospective patients to seek a board-certified physician. So far so good. The piece went on to suggest looking for one from “the big four,” meaning a dermatologist, an ear nose and throat specialist, an ophthalmologist or a plastic surgeon. No!

New York Nicks The Lifestyle Lift

Written by Cathy Enns on August 4, 2009 - 4:26pm

It’s not always a writer that gets to say, “Ah ha!” This is one of those rare moments.

While I will indulge myself very briefly and savor the opportunity to feel “in the know,” the more important thing to do is to present updated information I ran across about the Lifestyle Lift, specifically that the State of New York has levied a hefty fine against the organization that brings you this variation of facelift surgery.

Dracula Therapy is a Scary Proposition

Written by Christine Jeffries on November 4, 2009 - 3:49pm

I just found out about a new treatment for wrinkles that has me outraged and horrified at the same time. It’s called Stimulated Self Serum (S3) therapy. It’s been dubbed the Dracula Therapy, because this botox-like procedure includes drawing your own blood, and spinning it down to serum, red blood cells, and the platelets.

Do facials really work for your skin?

ASKED by Bargain Lover on November 3, 2008 - 1:33pm

How good are facials for keeping skin looking clear and younger? I have had a few facials and like them for reasons of relaxation, although I don't like my skin for the first few days after - since extractions tend to bring out acne that was underneath the surface of my skin. A week after a facial, my skin looks pretty good.

I do think they work but am wondering if it's because they feel great to experience, rather than doing any actual good for our skin?

Would you admit to having botox?

ASKED by Kristin Davis on May 21, 2008 - 11:29am

I have a friend who's had a facelift and also gets regular botox injections. But she's horrified at the thought of other people knowing. She'd never admit to people that she's had plastic surgery and botox. In fact once I was having lunch with her and her plastic surgeon happened to walk into the restaurant. She pretended that she didn't know him!

What do you all think about this? Shouldn't we be open about the work we've had done?
