24 years old and breast issues??

I am 24 years old and do have a 2 year old girl. I have been having some weird sensations in my breast that I don't know what to think of. It started 2 weeks ago when I was doing my self exam. I found that my left breast, which is also naturally smaller than the right, is more lumpier than the right. I got concerned and kept checking it for about a day. It got sore and then went away a few days later. 2 Nights ago, I was checking again. ( I hadn't done self exams as often and I should have.) This time I felt a sharp pain shoot through to my nipple area. This was in the area I had previously been checking alot that seems lumpier. It felt like my nipple was burning, but no discharge and no change in appearance. Today (2 days later) it doesn't hurt anymore and it still looks normal, but now it feels tingly in both breasts. I don't start my period again for 2 weeks. Thought maybe it's ovulation? I don't know. I know I need to see the doctor, but I am scared. Please help!!

Hi Kelise86 - Thanks for your question, and seeking information to support your health. I'm sorry you're scared right now, but having more information should help. Lumps and bumps are such are normal for most women, the absolutely perfect breasts shown in advertisements and for other purposes are not. :-)

The sharp pain may, or more likely may not, be cause for alarm. Please do see your doctor, and please do continue to observe any changes in your breasts and keep track of them. You're already doing an excellent job of this, by the way.

Please also read this article about breast and nipple pain, which is known by the clinical term mastalgia, and is fairly common in women your age. Sharp pain is most likely related to hormonal changes, and I think the information in the article will help reassure you until you're able to see your doctor. Let us know how your appointment goes, we wish you the best. Pat

Hello it's me kelise86. Just wanted to find out if you had any info on why now my breast are able to leak what looks like colostrum when I squeeze them only. They are tingling, just like a mother who is nursing when they have let down. I am going to the doctor tomorrow, and I am very worried. =(

Hi kelise - Thanks for writing again, and I'm sorry you're feeling scared and worried. Sometimes small amounts of milk can be expressed when nipples are squeezed or stimulated. Some women also experience this if they are on birth control pills. It's not dangerous but can be very inconvenient and frightening.

Any change in the breast, though, especially if only occurring on one side, needs an exam and work up. I'm so glad you made the doctor appointment and will be seen tomorrow. Do you have a friend who can go with you to the appointment? Sometimes that helps when you're nervous.

Most likely everything will be fine. I sure hope so! Let me know how the appointment goes and if I can help further.

Take good care,
Pat

Thank you. I don't have anyone going with me as my husband has to work and my mom is watching my daughter. Its on both sides and I'm not on BC. Could it also be that maybe my milk never fully dried up after I stopped breastfeeding my daughter a year and a half ago? I have been examining the breasts quite frequently since I found the lumpiness. Maybe I stimulated them too much? I will let you know how the appt. goes and thanks again!!

It's most likely a good sign if it's on both sides. Take it easy tonight, and you should have some answers soon.

I went to my appt. today. The doctor said it's probably nothing. He didn't feel anything abnormal in my breasts. He looked at the discharge under a microscope (it only came out of one breast today) and no red blood cells which he said is a really good sign. He did however order some blood work for me to get done to test for thyroid problems and the pituitary tumor. But he said if I don't have blurred vision, or headaches or anything, I'm more than likely just fine. He said it's pretty normal for woman who have breastfed to produce a few drops of milk well after they have stopped breastfeeding once in a while. Just wanted to let you know! =)

Kelise - Thanks for sharing your good news! I hope you're feeling more relaxed now, but I'm also glad he's going to do the follow up tests just to make sure that all is well. I hope you will find a way to treat yourself to acknowledge the positive steps you took in going in and getting this checked out. Chocolate is always nice. :-)
