Hi, I recently went off my birth control pills and have now had an extended period. I had my regular period and then about 2 extra weeks of brownish, thick discharge. It went away for 2 days and now its back again with bright red blood and cramping. I spoke with a doctor who said t was just break through bleeding because I went off my birth control, but is it normal for it to come back again like this?

Hi Anonymous,

It is very common to have irregular periods for at least 2 to 3 months after stopping birth control. It is different for each woman as I know it took me at least a year to get back to normal. You shouldn't fear that there is something wrong just yet. If you have any other concerns, certainly get in touch with your primary care doctor.

Good luck,

Missie
