I had sex on day 3 of my cycle. My cycle is 24 days. Am I safe? Around what time should I be ovulating?

Guide

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for reaching out to our community with your questions.

The menstrual cycle is counted from the first day of bleeding in one month to the first day of bleeding in the next month.

Ovulation can be calculated by starting with the first day of the last menstrual period or by calculating 12-16 days from the next expected period. Most women ovulate anywhere between Day 11 – Day 21 of their cycle, counting from the first day of the last menstrual period.

This is what many refer to as the “fertile time” of a woman’s cycle, because sexual intercourse during this time increases the chance of pregnancy.

Ovulation can occur at various times during a cycle, and may occur on a different day each month.

Anonymous, with a shorter than average menstrual cycle, you can ovulate sooner. Using birth control is the best way to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. If your period lasted seven days, then intercourse day 10 was cutting it close.

Maryann

Hello Anonymous,

If you re read my reply, you will see that the first day of your period is counted as day one of the new menstrual cycle. Continue counting the days you had your period, such as seven days, add three days from the last day of your period, and that brings you to day 10.

If you were having your period on the day you had intercourse, then you were safe and there was no risk for pregnancy.

I was counting the days just like you are doing. I had my period on 17th( day 1) I had sex on 19th ( day 3). That is what I meant. My period lasts only four days. I guess I am safe.
Thank you for your help.
