Another "Pregnant? or just Stress-induced missed period?" question

March 30, 2009 - 8:05pm 9398 reads 133 comments

The start of my most recent period was on Feb 26 - projected ovulation date being March 14, projected next period March 28 (via MyMonthlyCycles, where I have been keeping track of my period for 1 year). Average cycle - 30 days.

We had protected intercourse on March 3 and 24. The condom didn't break; slipped down maybe an inch but we pushed it right back up.

Now my period is 3 or 4 days late (depending if you count the 28th), with no usual signs of cramping etc that I normally get. Took two HPT's and both came out negative. Discharge looks normal, no tenderness of breasts or anything. I have had a little bit of an upset stomach but I think I may just be getting sick - I am under quite a bit of stress.

I know it's unlikely that I am pregnant, but I am paranoid since I can't afford to have a child right now. I have heard that stress really can throw off a regular period (I have been regular for 8 years now), but I have a hard time believing it since I am so paranoid... help? I don't know what's wrong with me!

Have a GYNO appt coming up in a month, but I'm the type of person who likes to know without going to the doc! It sure would be nice if my period would come!

Hi, Anon, and welcome to EmpowHer. I'm really glad you found us.

First of all, your period isn't that late. May 29th to today is 41 days, and while that means you are probably what, 10 days late? that happens sometimes. Yes, you are right, all the things you named can totally affect when your period comes, especially the stress and the worry about your grandpa. All of that can be an explanation of why you are late.

I am a little worried that you have exercised every day without missing since June. Are you worried that your eating disorder is coming back? Is the daily exercise a way to control how you're feeling?

And can you tell me what "messing around" for about 10 minutes without a condom means, exactly? Did his penis penetrate your vagina at all? Did he ejaculate, either inside you or outside? If so, is there any way that some of the ejaculate could have reached your vagina? As I imagine you know, there is also something called "pre-ejaculate" that does carry some sperm. So even if he didn't ejaculate inside you, the pre-ejaculate contains enough sperm that a pregnancy can occur.

And when you say how irregular your periods are, have you ever been this late before? Sometimes? A few times? Or never?

Hi again, Miss!

It sounds like you are getting your period but it has changed a bit. There may be many reasons for this - stress, diet or a change in your menstrual cycle that can't be explained. I've had months where everything was business as usual and then other months where my period was very short. If you are getting light bleeding or cramps on the days when you are due for your period, then it's likely to be your period!

Of course, you could be pregnant, especially if you are having unprotected sex. Having a blood test done is your best bet. Ask the clinic for this.

Is pregnancy something you wish to avoid? If so, please do avail of the birth control that these clinics supply so this won't be an issue for you.

Also, when was your last pap test? Have one, to rule out an infection or other issue.

Hello! I am very worried I could be pregnant, I am now about two weeks late. My period has been regular these last few months. My last period was in May, I started on the 20th and ended the 25th. My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex not long after that and he did in fact "finish" while he was in me. I took a First Response test this past Monday and it was negative. I am going to wait until this coming Monday to take another one. I have been having cramps and back aches like I'm about to get my period. I can't eat too much because then I get nauseous. I just started school two weeks ago and I have been stressing about school AND my late period. I just wanted to hear other peoples input. I'm quite worried though. Help?
