I just had my first ASTYM treatment and it was pretty intense and painful, has anyone else had this type of treatment? If so, did it work for you?
Thanks,
Ang

I just started last week. Yes extremly painful and lots of bruising. That I can handle but the stretches and having to ice 10 min. every hour are taking its toll on me. I work and icing that much is impossible. Plus the streeches hurt beyond what I can handle for pain. Hope I can write back with more positive notes. I go in today for my second ESTYM treatment. Its for both my achilles tendon and yes they do both heels in 1 treatment. Hope I make it ,would give anything to walk again without pain.

I agree I have had only 2 treatments of atsym therapy so far for tennis elbow and after the first visit I could cut and eat food with my right hand which I could not do before so I'm thrilled with this type of treatment cause the cortisone shots did not last very long at all but I do work in a factory and unlike you my therapist told me to do stretching and other exercise. So I think this treatment is worth all the bruises I get because I can use my right arm and hand so much more already and I think it will be a permanent fix when I'm done with therapy. So you hang in there and glad to hear it worked for you.

I was ran over by two cars when I was sixteen and my L5 vertabrae was crushed along with so many other injuries, I was told by all my docs that I would never walk again and would be confined to a wheelchair. I looked at my doc a said Fyou I am going to walk and run. I had a major limp the rest of my life but was able to do both. The doc that did my back, did a spinal fusion from my ribs to my hip bone. That was the only way to stabalize my spine at that time. I am now 46 and worked manual labor jobs, and performed a lot of work on auto's and pretty much did whatever I wanted despite all the injuries I sustained. Unfortunately because of the way I walked and everything I put my body through my whole back started hurting when I was about 40 and progressed to the point I couldn't move hardly at all. Pain was well above a 10, NOTHING helped. I went to many docs and all told me there was nothing that could be done to give me any relief and I would be on meds the rest of my life. I asked my pain management doc to send me to therapy after I had a bad fall and shattered my femor(hip). First time no relief so I requested therapy again only this time I just happened to choose one that did ASTYM. Finally I found relief but after having all that scar tissue in my back for 7 years it took many more treatments than they recommend. But I was finally able to start living again. One key that I found that helped and part of why it took so long is because you must do exercise on the treated muscles for it to work and speed the recovery, you must retrain the muscles. I wasn't told that when I first went for therapy and my second round of ASTYM I was doing research on it and came across the actual treatment studies and found out that I was suppose to exercise which none of the terapist had told me. When I started exercising after the treatment the scar tissue stopped reaccurring. I forgot to mention that part. Even though they were doing the treament the scar tissue would return. Also mine was so bad I literally asked them to do it harder and that speeded the process up. I know you all think it's painful but to me that was nothing compared to having my spine crushed, or the pain I was in. The harder the better for me, but I've lived with pain all my life with no meds so not all can endure what I can pain wise. But if you can take it the harder the better and exceise. ASTYM gave me my life back.

I wrote this post originally. In my opinion I think all therapist should be trained to do ASTYM. It is the only thing that has helped me get relief from the pain I was having. No pain med could give me enough relief to where I could function but ASTYM has given me a life that has quality and enjoyment back in it.

I had 6 treatments last year for trochanter bursistis. The first 2 hurt a lot and I was black and blue. Then there was remarkable improvement and I am painfree for the first time in years.

I have an injury to my left knee and weakness in the quadriceps and hampstrings. In addition to that, I have arthiritis in the same knee. At the time before my first Astym treatment, I had extreme difficulty climbing stairs without assistance, getting out of the chair or bed and walking at normal pace. My first treatment was PAINFUL!! The PT only concentrated right below my knee and a little on the quads. The pain closests to that was child labor pains. I swear--I was clenching the bench and trying not to cuss. The second treatment was just as painful but this time the PT did the full leg from the ankles to the top of the thigh front and back. After that treatment--i had good results. By my fourth treatment..I can climb stairs, get off the chair without struggling, and walk at a comfortable pace. (All within two weeks!) The pain does subsides as you improve. There may be hot spots that are extremely painful..but you have to just grit your teeth through it to see results.

I having been experiencing pain in my right knee. I have not been approved for an MRI as of this date, but I am hoping to get approved soon (after jumping through insurance hoops). I am scheduled for my first ASTYM treatment next week and I'm very nervous about it. The PT thinks I either have loose scar tissue or possible torn cartilige (if torn, I'm told ASTYM will do nothing to help). I'm nervous because I'm reading about how painful this treatment seems to be. Any feedback from anyone who's had it done to their knee?

Hi,
I had it done on my right knee and my daughter who is 15 is going through ASTYM treatment on her left knee right now. I had great results with this type of treatment and my daughter's knee is getting better as well.
How is your treatment going? Are you also finding it beneficial?
