Hi, I recently was prescribed azithromycen for a bacterial infection. I take a combo pill mononessa daily. So I started my only dose of azithromycen (1000mg) yesterday the 2nd. I was at the tail end of my pack last week into this week I had unprotected sex the 28th and 29th of July. I was wondering if I was still protected against pregnancy from last week (I contacted my gyno and she said I am protected against pregnancy from last week) . I am currently in my placebo pills on my second one today but my protection is compromised now since my antibiotic (I plan to abstain from sex for the next pack so I know the antibiotic is out) so how come I was protected from unprotected sex last week.

Hello Cupcake97
Thank you for writing.
Most antibiotics cause no interaction with birth control. Some do, but not many. It has become a bit of a presumption that all antibiotics cause birth control to be less reliable but this is not the case. Since a few antibiotics did, people started believing all did. There is little to no interaction between birth control and azithromycen.
If you were on active pills last week, then you were protected from pregnancy. If you only took one dose of antibiotics this week, it won't affect last week. Sperm from last week won't affect this week and this assuming there would be a reaction from the antibiotic in the first place which is not likely.
