Q:

beta hcg level

Hi, I am on birth control pill but I started getting very bad nausea this month. I was worried about pregnancy, so I got a beta hcg test done. The results were 0.6 iu/l. Could I be pregnant? I have read that anything less than 5 miu/ml means NOT pregnant, is iu/l same as miu/ml?

Thank you

Hello and thank you for sharing your question.

As long as you take the birth control pills correctly you will not become pregnant.  The can consider the test negative for pregnancy.  Nausea can be a side effect of some birth control pills.  Nausea can also be caused by any number of things unrelated to pregnancy.  If the nausea becomes a regular problem, then you may want to be checked for anemia which is very common among women.

What if your test was 0.6 (MIU/ML) and pee test are saying positive a week later? I am on the implant but was on several antibiotics for months due to being sick.

Hello, Anon.

If you are having a positive urine test a week later, contact your, doctor. They will likely test again to be sure.

Hi,

Thank you very much for replying. So is miu/ml equivalent to iu/l for the hcg test? With 0.6 iu/l hcg, is it consider normal for non pregnant woman?

Thank you

Yes, mIU/ml and iu/l are the same thing.  However, mIU/mL is usually used not iu/l.

Anything lower than 5 mIU/ml is "not pregnant" anything 5 or above is pregnant.  In other words, yes, 0.6 mIU/ml is normal for non-pregnant women.

Hi,

I just want one last question on the beta hcg. I've read that a non pregnant woman does not have hcg in their body since hcg is produce after implantation of the egg. Or is it that every woman has small amount of hcg in their body even though not pregnant? Which is why my result is 0.6 iu/l?

Thank you
