Q:

bleeding during sex, no period

Hi I am a 19 year old woman, I am on birth control and I've experienced some menstrual irregularities. Last month I had some break through bleeding 2 weeks early and then got a light period on my placebo week. Now it is the next month and I have not gotten my period. I had sex yesterday and noticed some blood on the tip of my boyfriends condom. What is going on with me? I am concerned it could be something medical, rather than pregnancy because we always use condoms and I am of course on birth control. Any info. would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi Anonymous,
Thanks for your question and for finding EmpowHER. Kudos to you and your boyfriend for being extra careful. There are a few things that can cause blood during intercourse, but it is never normal, and should be checked out by a doctor. You also should mention the breakthrough bleeding. It may be possible that the pill you are on isn't right for you if the breakthrough bleeding and other period symptoms are bothersome. There are many pills, and it may take some time to find one that works with well with your body.
Good luck and let us know what the doctor says.
