Body changes from weaning?

My daughter will be one year old a week from today. At 9 months we were breastfeeding 4 times per day. At 10 months I cut it back to 3. At 11 months, we went to 2 but I express both times and give her that mixed with some whole milk during the day. She's doing great with it, but I have been experiencing some odd things and not sure if they are related to weaning or something worse. I have had prolonged pain in the area of my ovaries for about 2-3 weeks of each of the last few months. The last 2 months I have been experiencing twinges of pain in different areas of my abdomen, which seem similar to pains in my abdomen the first month or two after delivery. I also get fuller quicker for the last month. It seemed like I couldn't eat enough when I was still at 3 times per day. I just experienced my first period post pardum and it was very heavy and bleeding lasted for 11 days. I have been experiencing sadness, lonliness and unrest for the past two months and I do have a history of depression and anxiety that are directly correlated to my hormones so I have been keeping an eye on that, but I'm wondering if I am just getting anxious again or if other women have experienced these symptoms when weaning. I was reading an article in woman's day and it listed these specific physical symptoms as early signs of ovarian cancer. I am 27 years old with PCOS and did have to use fertility drugs to conceive my daughter. Should I call my doctor or is it just weaning related.

I've been slowly weening for two months. Since then I have had dull cramping especially when I go to the bathroom (#2). Having discharge too. Saw my ob and she checked for bacterial and yeast infection and nothing. Said wait to see if I get a period. I too Google too much and worry it's ovarian cancer or something that she didn't test for. Hearing prolonged cramping on here at least makes me feel better. I too have had anxiety of being done with breastfeeding as this is my last baby:(. Oh in addition I too have had digestion issues big time since birth.

I am having similar symptoms since weaning my 13 month old daughter a few weeks ago. Mild depression & mood swings, which I attributed to the hormonal changes, decrease in appetite, but the one that is causing the most concern is a pain/pressure in my pelvic region on one side only. I feel it ever time I have sex and today it hurts with every step I take on that side. I just moved out of state do I have to find a new ob/gyn before I can get this checked out. I was thinking it could be ovulation, but it feels different than anything I've ever felt.
As for getting your child onto whole milk, just give it time. I found my daughter didn't like it at first for a week or two, so I supplemented with yogurt and cheese so she could get the calcium and fat, but now she chugs it down with no problem. Any advice on the pelvic pain?

Pre-pregnancy I would experience shooting pain in my ovaries, or what I think is pain in my ovaries, I would not be surprised if the pain you are experiencing is your ovaries getting back in to the swing of things. I have read that after pregnancy and breastfeeding your period can be totally different than pre-pregnancy. Also your cervix can change after pregnancy and sex can feel different. Not sure about why it hurts with every step. I would still try to find a new OB-GYN and follow up with them. Have you tried ibuprofen? Good Luck, hope you feel better soon! I know it is frustrating! I did start giving my baby Vanilla Rice Milk with added vitamins to help wean. She loves it and I'm now at 50/50 with her bottles. I know the Rice Milk doesn't have the fat that she needs so I will find something to give her to help with that but at least she is drinking something besides breastmilk.

I am having similar problems. I have been nursing for one year and started trying to wean about 3 weeks ago and not having much success. Anyway, I feel like I want to cut my V off! A week ago I felt like I was getting a UTI or something but then it started feeling like a yeast infection. Did a 3 day treatment OTC but didn't help so much so I went to GYN. Waiting for results but they gave me one pill and some cream. It's been 2 days and NOT helping! My stomach feels funny, I actually took pregnancy test because I feel so weird! I have subtle itch inside and out. My ovaries hurt like when I use to get my period. I will be calling GYN on Monday but can't stand this feeling in my head, in my stomach and in my V! To top it all off my baby is not taking to the whole milk and don't know what to do so I can get weaned.

For me, now that it has been a few weeks from weaning completely, my symptoms have abated. I'm feeling much more back to my pre-preggo self and the depression has gotten much better as well. I am certain that all of this had to do with weaning. Thanks for posting such information. You guys are great!

I am so glad to see this post because I am experiencing the same thing. I nursed my son for almost 2 years and stopped one month ago. From the time I started weaning until now I have had abdominal pain and all the symptoms you described above - feeling full more easily, anxiety, plus groin pain. I went to the doctor about a month ago and they did an ultrasound and didn't find anything abnormal. I also went to my family doctor and she did an X-ray to check for constipation. She noticed I had some swollen lymph nodes, but didn't seem overly concerned about them. I called to make another appointment with my OB/GYN last week because my period was very heavy and lasted for nine days last month and now I'm cramping with some bloody discharge. I've found several sites and journal articles where other people listed some of these same symptoms after weaning. I'm just concerned because when you read other things online it talks about ovarian or cervical cancer. I thought once I weaned everything would go back to normal, but it seems my body/hormones are all messed up right now.

Your concern that you have ovarian cancer: it is not very likely that the symptoms you are experiencing are related to this. Most symptoms of ovarian cancer do not show up until the later stages, and most of what you describe have more to do with your weaning than a possible chronic disease. Be wary of what you read---we could all easily diagnose ourselves with hundreds of chronic or even fatal diseases.

It makes more sense that the symptoms you are experiencing have to do with weaning, as you've been experiencing them for a few months, and have been weaning for a few months.

Your symptoms can easily be explained as weaning:
- Feeling full/loss of appetite: compared to breastfeeding for 11 months when you were expending 500+ more calories per day, you are not expending as many calories now that you are weaning, meaning you will not be as hungry and will feel full after a relatively-smaller meal.
- Hormonal changes: everything we do can equate to hormone changes, especially when referring to the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, breastfeeding and weaning. Are you seeking help for your depression, as this is very common and help is available.

With that said, I do think that anytime you have pain, a call to your doctor is a smart idea. Pain in your abdomen can be many things, and once you've ruled out constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, then your doctor can provide a recommendation for being seen or other advice, based on your specific situation.

Pain in your ovaries could be from your menstrual cycle--many women experience pain when ovulating during the middle of the cycle, but only for a day or two.

Since your exam is not until October, you may want to at least call your doctor's nurse and describe the pain you are experiencing; they will want to know if there are any trends (time of day, how long is lasts, what activities you were engaging in, etc.
