Hello everyone, I have been doing a lot of research online about brown discharge and it seems to be a common problem I'm realizing. I am 17 years old almost 18 so bear with me here but being in high school with this problem is quite embarrassing. I started having brown discharge about 4 months and it lasted the entire month my period was even a brown almost black. I got on the pill and was tested for all stds and had a pap all was normal. First month on the pill I had brown discharge the whole month but my period turned red this time. And after it was over to my relief I had no brown spotting. But of course 2 weeks later it started up again and went until my period. The same thing happen on my next cycle. It's very frustrating I have a boyfriend and it makes things difficult and me insecure. I was thinking about taking iron supplements my periods are fairly heavy and my mother is aniemic. But I have a very weak stomach. Douching is said to be a bad idea as well. I'm going to try rasberry tea though. But what I'm wondering is if anyone has had this problem and found some remedy or if Im just destine for years of frustration?

Hi Cnpagac,
You might want to get a second opinion from another doctor. Especially if it's something you recently started experiencing and you are still uncomfortable about.

I have seen an obgyn several times for this issue. Ive had a pap smear and had my cultures sent to a lab and have been tested for any infection or std. Her answer to me was I would just have to wait it out and there was nothing I can do. I've had my period for 5 years, this is just now happening I have never experienced it before. And I understand brown discharge is normal but months and weeks of this is very frustrating.

Hi Cnpagac,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Not all cases of brown vaginal discharge are cause for concern. Brown vaginal discharge is sometimes can be cause from old endometrial tissues.  Once you start puberty a white and/or clear discharge is normal. The vagina is self-cleaning. This same discharge increases the closer you get to ovulation and when you are sexually aroused. You can have this normal discharge for weeks, months or even years before getting your first period. It will also continue after you get your period. Sometimes you can have few times brown discharge before your first period.  Some of the other causes for brown discharge can also be Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), sexually transmitted diseases (gonorrhea, Chlamydia or genital warts) or cervical cancer.  It's important to see an OBGYN and explain what you have been experiencing.
