Can heartburn be brought on simply by aging? If so, does it involve increased stomach acid, or simply a weaker esophogeal sphincter?

Susan, thanks so much. Guess the next step is consult with my physician. For now, Ranitidine does the trick.

Hi Anon

Thanks for your post!

Yes, heartburn can be a result of aging, plain and simple.

It can start in the mouth, where getting older sees fewer of the enzymes in the mouth that aid with digestion.

Another reason is that hernias tend to occur in older people and these do lead to increased risk of heartburn. Here's an L.A. Times article in this very topic:

and here is a link to our Heartburn page:

I hope this helps and thanks for writing!

Susan, thank you for the excellent article. "Fewer of the enzymes that aid digestion"--am I right that enzymes don't come in a bottle?

Hi Anon

You are wrong, fortunately, as they DO come in a bottle!

As always, be aware what you are buying (like all supplements, these are likely not FDA approved) and check with your doctor in case they clash with any other medications you are on now.

Good luck!
