If you truly have been bleeding for the past month, it warrants a visit to the doctor or urgent care. Were you prescribed the birth control pills to control irregular periods or for birth control? If you are having trouble remembering to take the pill, try associating it with something like brushing your teeth (assuming you do that the same time every day). I used to take my birth control pills at bed time--it worked for me. If you continue to have trouble remembering, you may need to re-evaluate your birth control options. And like Cary said, use a backup method or abstain from sex if you're concerned about unwanted pregnancy.

No, the spotting will not protect you from becoming pregnant. Unprotected sex is always a risk for pregnancy, and you have not been on the pill long enough to be protected. I suggest you use a backup method of contraception for a month, and if you miss your next period, wait a week and take a pregnancy test.

The only way the pill works is if you take it every day as prescribed. Otherwise it is just like any other unprotected sex.
